Overview

The Trauma Coordinator is a registered nurse who is responsible for promoting optimal trauma care, through clinical activities, professional and public education, research activities, administrative functions, and quality improvement activities. The Trauma Coordinator is responsible for the Trauma PI Program, Trauma Registry, the RAC, Community Injury Prevention Programs, the Texas Trauma Coordinators Forum and Texas EMS Trauma and Acute Care Foundation (TETAF). Close communication with these groups allows the coordinator to function as a stabilizing force in the multidisciplinary care required by the trauma patient. This involvement begins with the pre-hospital resuscitation of the patient, care in the emergency department, and extends through admission to discharge home, transfer to an institution with a higher level of care, entering into a rehabilitation program, or death. It is important for the coordinator to establish and maintain a communication system with all departments and individuals involved in the care of trauma patients.

 
Responsibilities

Demonstrates thorough knowledge of the organization’s mission, vision, values.
Participates in and coordinates planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating the trauma program.
Maintains up-to-date knowledge of laws, regulations, and standards that affect the organization and ensures departmental compliance.
Collaborates with Nursing Director to develop departmental goals consistent with those of the organization
Reviews the plan of care for each trauma patient to ensure that trauma protocols are initiated and followed.
Responsible for developing Departmental Plan(s) and Scope of Service(s) and reviewing/updating at least annually.
Facilitates transfers of trauma patients to higher level of care facilities as appropriate.
Develops and recommends operating budget(s) in collaboration with Nursing Director and Fiscal Services
Monitors and assures compliance with allocated budget(s). Provides explanation/justification for +/- 10% variance (monthly)
Conducts monthly trauma staff meetings. Assures that minutes include communication of the organization’s direction and operation.  Distributes minutes to appropriate individuals.
Demonstrates a working knowledge of organizational policies, Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules and Regulations, and all policies affecting the departments.
Maintains current knowledge of trauma care via literature review, trauma rounds, and trauma conferences. Maintains a minimum of 12 educational credits in trauma related courses and conferences.
Collaborates with Administration, Medical Director, and other departments in planning and carrying out daily operations as appropriate.
Clearly and effectively writes  policies and procedures
Assures uniform implementation through appropriate planning and collaboration with affected departments
Completes an audit and Quality Improvement critique of all trauma registry patients’ records to evaluate delivery of care and identify barriers to the delivery of efficient trauma care. Provides staff with follow-up on identified problems and concerns.
Coordination of necessary formal trauma case reviews at Trauma Committee will be made based on Trauma QI filters.
Maintains up-to-date department manuals which are easily accessible to staff.
Maintains pertinent organizational manuals which are easily accessible to staff (i.e., Safety, Infection Control, Administrative, etc.
Prepares Position Descriptions/Performance Evaluations and Equipment/Skills/Knowledge Checklist for each position supervised
Recommends a sufficient number of skill mix of staff required to effectively meet the needs of the trauma patients.
Prepares, conducts and/or oversees department(s) trauma orientation and trauma training
Maintains up-to-date files for all department(s) employees
Facilitates and/or coordinates inservice and continuing education for department(s) personnel
Participates in organization and department process for selection of improvement activities.
Implements and maintains the trauma registry by supervising data collection, analyzing data, identifying trends, and distributing reports to appropriate team members, administrators and to the state trauma registry. This allows tracking of system components in a timely and comprehensive way, providing the mechanism for coordinators to evaluate patient care and quality improvement, injury control and epidemiology, resource utilization and costs and medical education.
Submits Performance Improvement data in a timely manner.
Recommends and implements improvements as indicated.
Evaluates effectiveness of performance improvement activities
Responsible for ensuring that Harlingen Medical Center is in constant compliance with the Texas Department of Health and the American College of Surgeons Standards for Designation as a Level IV trauma center.
Communicates space needs for optimal department(s) process for selection of improvement activities
Determines supply needs for department(s) functioning
Facilitates capital equipment acquisition
Reviews quality control documentation at least on a monthly basis and

Institutes corrective action when indicated
Investigates/follows up on complaints, issues and occurrences regarding the department(s) in a timely manner
Demonstrates ability to solve problems
Identifies needs for new/additional products and/or equipment
Thoroughly researches available products/equipment including meeting with vendors, company representatives, reading current literature, etc.
Assesses and evaluates cost impact on patient and organization
Attends disaster training as necessary
Organizes disaster drills in collaboration with Facilities
Provides trauma patient care when necessary
Performs all other duties as assigned or required.
Qualifications

1.             Education: Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.   Bachelor of Science, preferred.

2.             Licensure/Certification: Current licensure by the Texas State Board of Nurse Examiners. Must maintain current certification in BLS, ACLS, PALS, ENPC, and  TNCC.

3.             Experience: Minimum of three years in emergency nursing and in the care of trauma patients.
