Overview
Inpatient- The Pharmacy Supervisor in conjunction with the Director of Pharmacy is responsible for the coordination and control of the Pharmacy Services throughout the hospital; maintenance of the policies and procedures that assure safe administration, control, storage and use of medications throughout the hospital. He / she may serve as fulltime PIC (Pharmacy Manager) or acting PIC in the absence of the Director of Pharmacy, and is responsible for management of the Pharmacy staff; financial decisions including inventory control and the budgeting process; interactions with physicians and other departments concerning quality of care and education; ensuring that all licensing criteria are met and up to date; attend administrative meetings related to regulatory affairs; implement/change operations based on State and Federal regulations and any other functions concerned with patient care and operations of the Pharmacy consistent with policies and procedures of the hospital and State and Federal laws. 

Responsibilities

1.
DAILY OPERATIONS
In conjunction with the Director of Pharmacy, ensure daily operations meet needs of all customers.  Ensures appropriate staffing on a daily basis.  Strives to continually improve processes and department workflow.  Facilitates and encourages safe medication practices. Works as a staff pharmacist as schedule requires. 
 
2.
MEDICATION ACTIVITIES
Ensures the adequacy and accuracy of all medication activities performed by department staff.  Ensures records are maintained according to hospital policy, state, and Federal regulations. 
 
3.
PERFORMANCE EVALUATIONS
Assists in the evaluation and performance of assigned staff at appropriate intervals as deemed by the organization.  Ensures completion of annual competencies of staff. 
 
4.
HUMAN RESOURCES AND TRAINING:
Provides support in the hiring, training, supervision, evaluations, and termination of assigned staff as appropriate.  Orients and trains, assures observance of policies, procedures, work standards and competencies. Assists the Director of Pharmacy to hold regularly scheduled staff meetings. 
 
5.
FORMULARY MANAGEMENT
Maintains and enforces the Formulary system.  Participates in drug use evaluations as assigned.  Provides input to Coordinator, Director and Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee regarding usage of Formulary medications.
 
6.
POLICIES AND PROCEDURES
Works with Administrator, pharmacy supervisory personnel and other leaders as needed to create, revise and implement Pharmacy Department and medication management policies and procedures throughout the hospital.
 
7.
STAFF EDUCATION
Serves as clinical knowledge resource and mentor for pharmacy staff in areas of expertise.  Provides guidance to pharmacists when solving medication-related problems.  Provides in-services to nursing and other hospital staff as scheduled. Provides and/or coordinates pharmacy staff education as needed.
 
8.
COMMITTEE PARTICIPATION
Represents the Pharmacy on various inter-department and other committees as assigned. Prepares reports and attends Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee meetings.  Participates in hospital and corporate level committees as appropriate.  Ensures that committee decisions are summarized to Pharmacy staff and implemented as required. 
 
9.
Performs all duties of a Pharmacist including processing physician medication orders, preparing and dispensing medication for patient use according to policy and procedure if schedule requires. Leads by professional example while staffing as required.
 
10.
INSPECTIONS
Ensures periodic inspections of all areas where medications are stored.  Assures proper storage, handling, and labelling requirements of medications according to Federal regulations, State regulations and hospital policy.  Ensures medications are in date.  Maintains required records.   
 
11.
SECURITY
Ensures that the security of the pharmacy and all medication storage areas is maintained.
 
12.
CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES:
Ensures that narcotics and all controlled substances are handled and secured according to Federal and State regulations. Maintains related records as required.
 
13.
STERILE PRODUCTS
Ensures that preparation of sterile products in the hospital complies with Federal regulations, State regulations and hospital policy. 
 
14.
QUALITY IMPROVEMENT
Responsible for quality assurance and performance improvement activities.  Encourages staff participation in department quality improvement activities, including identification and reporting of medication errors, adverse drug reactions, patient-specific interventions and other clinical recommendations.  Maintains records as required.  Prepares reports as necessary. 
 
15.
COMPUTER SYSTEMS
Routinely coordinates with departmental and Information Technology staff to ensure that systems are maintained and upgraded as appropriate. 
 
16.
Acts on behalf of the Director in his or her absence. 
 
17.
Performs other duties as assigned or required.
 
 

Qualifications

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING
 
  • Current state Registered Pharmacist License.
  • S. degree in Pharmacy required
  • Doctor of Pharmacy or Master’s Degree in Pharmacy or related field preferred.
  • 5 years of previous hospital pharmacy experience required.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills required.
  • Experience with hospital pharmacy computer systems, spreadsheets, word processing programs, and other databases required.
