Job Description

Overview Manager of Emergency Department is responsible for the day to day management and coordination of all activities in the Emergency Department. Supervises and monitors performance of the Emergency Department staff. Interacts with the physicians, hospital staff, outside agencies, patients and patients families/significant other(s) to provide comprehensive care.

Responsibilities 1. Demonstrates thorough knowledge of the organization’s mission, vision, values.

2. Participates in development of the organization’s strategic and long range plans.

3. Maintains up-to-date knowledge of laws, regulations, and standards that affect the organization and ensures departmental compliance.

4. Collaborates with Chief Nursing Officer to develop departmental goals consistent with those of the organization

5. Responsible for developing Departmental Plan(s) and Scope of Service(s) and reviewing/updating at least annually.

6. Develops and recommends operating budget(s) in collaboration with Chief Nursing Officer and Fiscal Services

7. Monitors and assures compliance with allocated budget(s). Provides explanation/justification for +/- 10% variance (monthly)

8. Conducts monthly department staff meetings. Assures that minutes include communication of the organization’s direction and operation. Distributes minutes to appropriate individuals.

9. Demonstrates a working knowledge of organizational policies, Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules and Regulations, and all policies affecting the departments.

10. Collaborates with Administration, Medical Director, and other departments in planning and carrying out daily operations as appropriate.

11. Clearly and effectively writes policies and procedures

12. Assures uniform implementation through appropriate planning and collaboration with affected departments

13. Maintains up-to-date department manuals which are easily accessible to staff.

14. Maintains pertinent organizational manuals which are easily accessible to staff (i.e., Safety, Infection Control, Administrative, etc.

15. Prepares Position Descriptions/Performance Evaluations and Equipment/Skills/Knowledge Checklist for each position supervised

16. Recommends a sufficient number of skill mix of staff required to effectively meet the needs of the patients.

17. Prepares, conducts and/or oversees department(s) orientation and training

18. Interviews and hires staff and assures thatare met.

19. Assures 100% of staff attends initial orientation/annual updates and department orientation

20. Assures completion of Equipment/Skills/Knowledge Checklist and Performance Evaluations within established time frames

21. Coaches/counsels employees and develops clear action plan for improvement of employee

22. Terminates employees in collaboration with Human Resources, as needed

23. Maintains up-to-date files for all department(s) employees

24. Facilitates and/or coordinates in-service and continuing education for department(s) personnel

25. Participates in organization and department process for selection of improvement activities.

26. Develops and maintains mechanism for collection and collation of data

27. Submits Performance Improvement data in a timely manner.

28. Recommends and implements improvements as indicated.

29. Evaluates effectiveness of performance improvement activities

30. Communicates space needs for optimal department(s) process for selection of improvement activities

31. Determines supply needs for department(s) functioning

32. Facilitates capital equipment acquisition

33. Researches and recommends contract services/registry when needed

34. Assures and maintains registry/contract personnel files consistent with hospital policy

35. Reviews quality control documentation at least on a monthly basis and Institutes corrective action when indicated

36. Investigates/follows up on complaints, issues and occurrences regarding the department(s) in a timely manner

37. Demonstrates ability to solve problems

38. Assures Staffing based on acuity, case mix and census

39. Assures staff assignments are based on competency and skills of available staff

40. Evaluates fluctuations and/or unforeseen staffing/patient care needs and takes appropriate action

41. Identifies needs for new/additional products and/or equipment

42. Thoroughly researches available products/equipment including meeting with vendors, company representatives, reading current literature, etc.

43 Assesses and evaluates cost impact on patient and organization

44. Completes annual Pronouncement of death competency

45. Pronounces death according to policy

46. Attends disaster training as necessary

47. Organizes disaster drills in collaboration with Facilities

48. Demonstrates knowledge of Reddinet.

49. Provides patient care when necessary

50. Accuracy assesses need for ER saturation

51. Attends daily staffing meeting

52. Performs all other duties as assigned or required.

Qualifications 1. Must have a current and valid state license as a Registered Nurse.

2. BLS (AHA) upon hire and maintain current.

3. A minimum of two years supervisory/management experience necessary.

5. Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN) preferred.

6. PALS upon hire and maintain current.

7. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) (AHA) upon hire and maintain current.

8. Minimum of three years of continuous clinical experience in a clinical/acute care setting.

9. Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
