Job Description

Overview The Certified Hyperbaric Technologist (CHT) or Certified Hyperbaric Specialist (CHS)  working in Hyperbaric department is responsible for assisting the Medical Director, medical staff and registered nurses with the assessment, treatment and education of patients in an advanced wound care and hyperbaric oxygen therapy center. The Certified Hyperbaric Technologist/Specialist assists in the provision of safe and therapeutic management of patient care to an assigned group of patients in adherence to the Standards of Practice and policies and procedures and in collaboration with other members of the health care team

Responsibilities Consistently uses two patient identifiers when performing procedures, and administering medications.

Does not use unacceptable abbreviations in documentation.

Demonstrate an understanding of the hyperbaric chamber system (monoplace) operating procedures. Thoroughly understand and demonstrate the immediate actions required with regards to all established Hyperbaric Emergency Procedures.

Cleans and maintains the equipment according to infection control standards.

Is in compliance with information contained in the Infection Manual ( i.e. OSHA bloodborne pathogen standards, CDC Guidelines ), and demonstrates appropriate use of personal protective equipment ( i.e. gloves, gowns, masks, goggles ) and handwashing techniques.

Maintains legible and accurate record of all aspects of a hyperbaric oxygen therapy, Safety checks and chamber maintenance, as required. 

Assists physicians with special tests and procedures in the department. Uses time out on all patients for any bedside procedures.

Avoids and prevents injury to self and patients by applying the principles of body mechanics. Maintains a safe environment, functioning with an awareness and application of safety issues identified within the unit/facility, i.e. suction and oxygen immediately available when needed.

Able to carry out relevant diagnostic and clinical procedures such as:  report accurate medical history to nurse or physician; assess for pain and document findings; obtain vital signs; observe for changes in neurological status; collection and removal of patient waste; observe and supervise patient throughout the hyperbaric oxygen treatment; document depth pressures and air breaks; maintains records and reports of unusual occurrences and interrupted hyperbaric sessions to department director.

Assist in educating the patient and/or the patient's family of the risks, benefits, indications, and safety procedures specific to hyperbaric oxygen therapy treatments.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING

  1. Maintenance of CHT/CHS qualifying credential (or certification within 12 months of hire in case not certified by the time of employment).
  2. Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certificate
  • One year clinical experience in Outpatient Wound Center preferred.
  • EMT/Paramedics, Active Duty Corpsmen, diver medical technicians preferred.
