Overview

The House Supervisor is a Registered Nurse who assumes administrative responsibility for the management of all department service functions on his/her shift. Makes frequent rounds throughout facility to monitor the delivery of care, oversee the quality of services and direct patient care activities as needed. Directly supervises, provides support to and communicates with all staff house-wide. In the absence of the Hospital Administrative staff, the administrative scope and responsibility is extended to all services within the hospital. Ensures efficient operations and patient flow throughout the hospital. Performs direct patient care, only as needed, within the scope of practice and competence. Ensures all temporary agency personnel are deployed and oriented in compliance with hospital policy. Assist medical staff with scheduling after hour procedures and calling in stand-by call staff members. Enhances the patient/family experience through supportive interactions and explanations of hospital policies as needed.

 

Utilizes appropriate judgment in placing patients in proper units according to diagnosis, principles of infection control and patient acuity/severity of illness and age of patient.a.) Assigns Pediatric patients to a Med/Surg room.b.) Assigns adolescent and young adult patients together appropriately.c.) Demonstrates sensitivity to patient’s condition and assigns to a room with compatible patient(s) as possible.d.) Assigns patients identified at "high risk for fall" in rooms near the nursing stations.Visits all patient care units to ascertain condition of patients, evaluate staffing needs and provide support to caregivers.Administers the effective deployment, orientation and utilization of personnel employed during the respective shift.Coordinates and evaluates services rendered by and to all departments during the respective shift on an ongoing basis.Keeps the CNO/DON and Administrator informed regarding circumstances or situations which have or may have serious impact or pose riskAssumes the duties as outlined in the Emergency Preparedness Plan during emergency situations as appropriate.Exhibits leadership responsibility and accountability to ensure safe, quality patient care throughout the hospital.Demonstrates knowledge of Human Resource policies and basic Labor Laws.Demonstrates knowledge of deemed agencies, regulatory and accreditation standards.Demonstrates knowledge of National Patient Safety Goals (NPSG).

Responsibilities

Follows Pharmacy protocols for obtaining medications when the pharmacist is unavailable.Demonstrates knowledge of staffing patterns, patient care ratios and patient acuity systems to provide adequate staffing; reviews schedules and adjusts as necessary to meet defined patient needs.Provides effective communication and coordination between the medical staff, ancillary staff, nursing administration, and nursing staff.Plans and directs orientation and deployment of contract employee’s temporary agency personnel.

A.)  Verifies current state license, CPR, ACLS, and/or other certifications if appropriate.B.)  Provides orientation check list and assures completion in a timely manner.C.)  Provides hospital evaluation form and assures completion in a timely manner.Independently recognizes and performs disciplinary actions concerning unusual occurrences regarding employees. Provides feedback to respective DON and/or other House Supervisors regarding any performance concerns and develops action plans as appropriate.Informs administrative personnel appropriately of events, problems, and needs within the hospital. Works to improve services with the facility.Promotes implementation of hospital policies and procedures and administrative directives.Helps to coordinate and integrates services with the nursing department and with other departments.Supports staff in detecting and reporting medication errors and adverse drug reactions (ADR’s) according to hospital policy.Supervises staff to ensure the patients, families, visitors, physicians and staff are treated with courtesy and respect.Assumes accountability for the performance of tasks of employees directed under his/her direct supervision.Responsible for adverse event/consequences as a result of his/her independent judgment when assigning the staff and evaluating patient care outcomes.Appropriately assigns, delegates, and supervises patient care activities utilizing independent judgment to assess the qualifications and experience/competency of the staff member and individual needs of the patient (activity) and family.Complies with all regulatory requirements for clinical pathways, clinical assessments, interventions and documentation.Mentor staff by demonstrating empathy and respect for patients by explaining all procedures, providing privacy and allowing patients to express emotional needs.Demonstrates and fosters an awareness and understanding of the hospital continuous quality program including Core Measures. Ensures staff implementation of standardized Core Measures procedures.Demonstrates ability for conflict resolution when resolving issues with employees and/or patients.Evaluates performance of staff through verbal and written communication with Director/ manager in performance evaluations.Participates in interviews effectively and provides recommendation for hire to the respective DON or the CNO for open positions.Monitors time and attendance for licensed and unlicensed personnel.Assumes leadership responsibilities by assisting with clinical staff meetings, providing agenda items, educational opportunities, and items needing to be addressed for corrective actions.Performs other management duties requiring independent judgment as assigned by the respective DON and/or the CNO.Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Qualifications

  • Current and valid license as a Registered Nurse.

  • Current BLS (AHA) certificate upon hire and maintain current.

  • ACLS (AHA) certificate 30 days upon hire and maintain current.

  • One (1) year prior experience as a Supervisor preferred.

  • Current Behavioral Violence Prevention (BVP) certificate within 3 months of hire and maintain current

  • Minimum of three (3) years acute care nursing experience

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
