Job Description

Demonstrates knowledge and skills to assist the Histology technician with the processing and storage of histology specimens. See Duties and Responsibilities for Histology Assistant.

Must provide laboratory services to meet the needs of patients as ordered by the medical staff and performed in accordance with accepted standards and practices. Obedient to all hospital wide and departmental safety rules so that accidents or injuries are prevented and / or avoided by self, coworkers, patients and / or visitors.
Responsible for organizing and preparing incoming and referral specimens for analysis by the Pathologist. Will assist the technician to maintain necessary files for maintaining absolute certainty the identification of each specimen, block and slide throughout processing and storage. Participates in implementation of all policies relating to performance improvement, quality control and handling and disposal of hazardous materials.

Checks patient demographics on slip and specimen container and initiates immediate action when discrepancies occur.
Assigns a sequential accession number to each surgical specimen and maintains an accurate log.

Keeps specimens in proper condition prior to grossing.

Performs all procedures as specified in procedure manual.
Maintains absolute certainty of identification of each specimen, block and slide throughout processing and storage.
Assists pathologists during grossing process and accurately sets tissue processor.
Processes, cuts and stains blocks of tissue from surgical and autopsy specimens in a timely manner.

Prepares and stains frozen sections to the satisfaction of the Pathologist.
Prepares, stains and labels cytology slides following the procedure as specified in the manual.

Files blocks and slides accurately.
Files slides and blocks sequentially so they may be retrieved easily at all times.
Discards gross specimens only after any needed permit has been signed and following the procedure in the manual.

Adequately maintains instruments and follows QC and QI procedures.

Reports equipment failure and documents maintenance procedures.
Recognizes patient specific needs according to age to provide care needed as described in the laboratory policies and procedure manual.

Ability to obtain and analyze facts and apply sound judgment.
Stores reagents in assigned department area as soon as they are received in compliance with manufacturer's recommendation.
Communicates departmental problems to appropriate lab / hospital personnel. Related information is documented appropriately.
Function within the scope of practice based on licensure, education skill and experiences. Recognizes own limitations and asks for guidance whenever a situation is outside the employee?s realm of responsibility and / or ability.
Prepares stains, reagents and solutions for fixation and dehydration as set out in procedure manual.

Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor
Established service priorities, work routines to assure of prompt and efficient delivery of service.
Contributes opportunities for improvement as it relates the department and / or the laboratory.
Maintains working areas clean and organized at the beginning, during and at the end of the shift.
Able to maintain all department operations in the absence of the department supervisor.
Correctly organizes and prepares referral specimens for analysis and maintains logbook and related documentation appropriately.

Helps to maintain high standards for CAP inspection.
Submits documentation of active/current membership of a laboratory organization and/or professional affiliation. Professional growth and development is maintained through professional publications.
