POSITION TITLE:               HEMODIALYSIS TECHNICIAN

 

DEPARTMENT:                 Inpatient Renal - Dialysis

 

REPORTS TO:                   MANAGER/DIRECTOR

JOB SUMMARY: The Hemodialysis Technician is an unlicensed health care provider responsible for assisting the Registered Nurse in the care of patients undergoing hemodialysis treatment within scope of practice. Responsibilities include maintenance and disinfection of dialysis equipment, ordering and stocking supplies necessary for in- patient dialysis treatment. Monitoring and cleaning supply area as well as other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING

 

  1. High School Diploma or equivalent
  2. Current BLS (AHA) certificate upon hire and maintain current.
  3. One year of hemodialysis experience preferred
  4. Hemodialysis Technician Certification, will consider training.

Assist Registered Nurse with care of patients undergoing dialysis procedures

Prepares patient and equipment for dialysis procedures within scope of practice

 

3.

Maintains and disinfects dialysis equipment according to regulatory requirements (CDC, State, etc…)

Ordering and stocking of supplies required to provide dialysis services.

 

5.

Explains all procedures to patients maintaining privacy and allowing patients to express emotional needs.

Demonstrates knowledge of the National Patient Safety Goals.

 

 

  1. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

RATING

1.

Recognizes signs of abuse and reports appropriately to the hospital social worker and/or Child /Adult Protective Services. Familiar with the EMTALA Regulations.

 

2.

Attends and maintains mandatory training in safe patient handling, trained in safe lifting techniques, includes but not limited to 1) Appropriate use of lifting devices and equipment, 2) Five areas of body exposure: vertical, lateral, bariatric repositioning and ambulation, 3) Use of lifting devices to handle patients safely.

 

3.

Uses professional judgment and clinical assessment in safe patient handling that are consistent with Safe Patient Handling policies.

 

4.

Uses two patient identifiers consistently prior to performing patient procedures.

 

5.

Does not use unacceptable abbreviations in documentation

 

6.

Is in compliance with information contained in the Infection Manual (i.e. OSHA blood borne pathogen standards, CDC Guidelines), and demonstrates appropriate use of personal protective equipment (e.g., gloves, gowns, masks, goggles) and hand hygiene techniques.

 

7.

Responsible for assisting the RN with implementation, administration and monitoring of patient’s response to prescribed intradialytic transfusions.

 

8.

Avoids and prevents injury to self and patients by applying the principles of body mechanics. Maintains a safe environment, functioning with an awareness and application of safety issues identified within the unit/facility.

 

9.

Assists the RN with establishing priorities for patient care based on essential needs and available resources of time, equipment, personnel and supplies.

 

10.

Complies with all regulatory requirements within scope of practice.

 

11.

Performs all other duties as assigned or required.
