Job Description


JOB SUMMARY: Externs function under the supervision of the attending physician, medical director in assisting with patient care. Demonstrates ability to perform competencies as outlined in externship policy and job responsibilities. Demonstrates age-specific care as established for area and job title.


1. Medical Graduate, PA or RN with current valid license and relevant education.

2. Minimum of three or more (3+) years clinical experience in an acute care setting, required.

3. Prior Case Management experience, preferable.

4. Knowledge of care delivery, clinical documentation systems and related medical record documents, required.

5. Knowledge of age-specific needs and the elements of disease processes and related procedures, required.

6. Strong broad-based clinical knowledge and understanding of pathology / physiology of disease processes, required.

7. Demonstrates excellent written and verbal communication skills; Excellent critical thinking skills, required.

8. Excellent interpersonal skills to build effective partnering relationships with physicians, nurse staff, and hospital management staff.

9. Working knowledge of inpatient admission criteria.

10. Ability to work independently in a time-oriented environment.

11. Computer literacy and familiarity with the operation of basic office equipment.

12. Assertive personality traits to facilitate ongoing physician communication.

13. Working knowledge of Medicare reimbursement system and coding structures preferred.

14. Current ALCS (AHA) certification upon hire and maintains current.
