Overview
 The Director of Med/Surg  is a Registered Nurse who assumes 24 hour administrative responsibility for the management of all nursing service functions within medical/surgical unit. Supervises, assesses, plans, implements and evaluates the delivery of patient care. Develops and implements departmental plans, including performance improvement activities and compliance with current regulations. Assumes 24 hour accountability for the departments. Supervises and evaluates all personnel assigned to the unit and effectively utilizes nursing personnel, time responsibilities for the unit and is directly accountable to the CNO or Administrator. Consults and communicates with staff, physicians and administration both written and verbally on nursing issues and interpretation of hospital policies to ensure patient needs are met. Assumes house supervisory responsibilities as assigned, including responding to codes throughout the hospital, assessing and charting, and following through with appropriate documentation. Oversees the provision of patient care for adolescent, adult and older adult patients

Responsibilities

1. Establishes priorities of patient care based on essential needs and available resources of time, equipment, personnel and supplies.
2. Participates in development of the organization’s strategic and long range plans.
3. Maintains up-to-date knowledge of laws, regulations, and standards that affect the organization and ensures departmental compliance.
4. Collaborates with Chief Nursing Officer to develop departmental goals consistent with those of the organization
5. Responsible for developing Departmental Plan(s) and Scope of Service(s) and reviewing/updating at least annually.
6. Develops and recommends operating budget(s) in collaboration with Chief Nursing Officer and Fiscal Services.
7. Monitors and assures compliance with allocated budget(s). Provides explanation/justification for +/- 10% variance (monthly).
8. Confers with other departments or outside resources regarding unit / patient needs.
9. Plans and directs orientation of new hires; A. Provides orientation checklist and ensures completing in a timely manner. B. Oversees preceptors.
10. Supports staff in recognizing signs of abuse and how to report appropriately to Child / Adult Protective Services.
11. Evaluates staff ability to administer and control narcotics including parenterals and blood components. Assists staff in detecting and reporting medication errors and adverse drug reactions (ADR’s) according to hospital policy.
12. Directs, supervises, and evaluates nursing care provided to patients.
13. Responsible for coordination of unit specific Performance Improvement activities and utilizes the information to improve the quality of patient care.
14. Observes the performance of nursing personnel and completes performance evaluations. Handles appropriate problems with performance of unit personnel and follows up appropriately.
15. Ensures staff consistently completes an accurate pertinent initial assessment on new patients including psychosocial and emotional needs within the established time frame (30 minutes for unstable / critical patients).
16. Conducts monthly department staff meetings. Assures that minutes include communication of the organization’s direction and operation.  Distributes minutes to appropriate individuals.
17. Collaborates with Administration, Medical Director, and other departments in planning and carrying out daily operations as appropriate.
18. Clearly and effectively writes and reviews departmental policies and procedures; Maintains all manuals current and easily accessible to staff.
19. Researches and recommends contract services/registry when needed.
20. Assures and maintains registry/contract personnel files consistent with hospital policy.
21. Investigates/follows up on complaints, issues and occurrences regarding the department(s) in a timely manner.
22. Assures staff assignments are based on competency and skills of available staff.
23. Evaluates fluctuations and/or unforeseen staffing/patient care needs and takes appropriate action.
24. Uses two patient identifiers consistently when drawing lab, administering medications and performing procedures.
19. Ensures Crash Cart, defibrillation function have been checked per protocol and after each code, appropriate items are immediately replaced and indicated by signature on crash cart checklist.
20. Is in compliance with information contained in the Infection Manual (i.e. OSHA blood borne pathogen standards, CDC Guidelines), and demonstrates appropriate use of personal protective equipment (i.e. gloves, gowns, masks, goggles) and hand washing techniques.
21. Ensures consistently that all clinical alarms i.e. cardiac monitor alarms are set with the appropriate parameters for the patient and are audible at all times.
22. Avoids and prevents injury to self and patients by applying the principles of body mechanics. Maintains a safe environment, functioning with an awareness and application of safety issues identified within the unit/facility, i.e. suction and oxygen immediately available at all times.
23. Does not use unacceptable abbreviations in documentation and uses read back on all telephone orders. Monitors authentication and validation of telephone orders within 24 hours by the physician.
24. Uses professional judgment and clinical assessment in safe patient handling that are consistent with Safe Patient Handling policies.
20. Responsible for the observation and direction of patient lifts, mobilization, and shall participate as needed in patient handling. 
21. Attends and maintains mandatory training in safe patient handling,  trained in safe lifting techniques, includes but not limited to 1. Appropriate use of lifting devices and equipment, 2) Five areas of body exposure: vertical, lateral, bariatric repositioning and ambulation 3) Use of lifting devices to handle patients safely.
22. Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Qualifications

 1.Current and valid state registered nurse license.
2. Current BLS (AHA) certificate upon hire and maintain current.
3. Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) - (AHA) certificate upon hire and maintain current.
4. Current Critical Care RN (CCRN) or Medical Surgical Certified (ANA) certificate(s) upon hire, preferred.
5. A minimum of two years supervisory/management experience necessary.
6. Minimum of three years of continuous clinical experience in a clinical/acute care setting preferred.
7. Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
