JOB SUMMARY: Under general supervision the Certified Diabetes Educator (RN, RD, Pharmacist, MD, Dentist, FNP) is responsible to assist with the daily assessment of the needs of the in-patient departments related to diabetes patient education, initial and on-going training of staff, coordinate, implement and evaluate specific diabetes education related to clinical nursing/staff functions. The incumbent is also responsible for ensuring that all patient care nursing staff is oriented to the standards of care and the nursing scope of practice at the Medical Center as well as the policy and procedures and medical equipment used in routine diabetic patient care. The incumbent acts as a facilitator for learning new skills as well as updating current skills related to diabetes. The Certified Diabetes Educator is responsible for communication with the Out-Patient RD Nutrition and Diabetes Manager as well as the Directors and Supervisors regarding diabetic educational needs, and participates in planning the curriculum. The incumbent demonstrates professional accountability in the acknowledgement of, and compliance with accepted American Diabetes Association standards of Out-Patient and In-Patient Diabetes Education as well as a commitment to act within ethical principles and uses independent, dependent, and interdependent interventions to fulfill this responsibility. #LI-JS1


Education and Work Experience

  • Current and valid applicable state professional License.

  • Current BLS (AHA) certificate upon hire and maintain current.

  • Certified Diabetes Educator certification, Preferred. (If not a CDE, 15 hrs of Continuing Education in Diabetes within 2 months of hire and 15 hours of Continuing Education every year until CDE obtained)

  • A minimum of three (3) years experience in a clinical environment within scope of licensure.

  • Excellent clinical, interpersonal and communication skills essential.

  • Team approach to patient care.

  • Working knowledge of computers and computer applications.

  • Day and evening flexibility required.

  • If RN, Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
