Job Description



Overview

The Monitor Tech is an unlicensed person who performs indirect care in the department setting. Monitors cardiac rhythms via direct cardiac monitors. Meets the communication needs of the department. Transcribes physician orders records with notation and signatures by nursing staff. Prepares and complies records in the Telemetry unit. Orders supplies for the unit and prepares and completes each patients chart  for necessary forms needed on a daily basis. Able to assist nursing staff for duties involving indirect patient care.

Transcribes accurately physician’s orders under the supervision of the RN. Monitors authentication and validation of telephone orders of physicians within 24 hours. Enters orders correctly in the computer.Posts lab results, x-rays and other reports accurately after being reviewed by the RN. Alerts nursing staff to abnormal lab results.Observes monitors for arrhythmia’s reports changes to the RN.Checks for accuracy, completeness and correctness of patients records. Assembles charts on new admissions and prepares charts for patient transfers.

Responsibilities

Obtains monitor strips and posts the strips on the patient record with interpretations according to hospital policy.a.    Rateb.    P-R intervalc.    QRS intervald.    RhythmConsistently ensures that all clinical alarms i.e. Cardiac monitors are set with the appropriate parameters for the patients and are audible at all times.Consistently aware of importance of patient identification when re banding a patient or posting lab results on a chart to ensure correct information.Does not use unacceptable abbreviations and alert physicians and staff when transcribing orders. Checks for completeness, accuracy and correctness of patient’s record.Avoids and prevents injury to self and patients by applying the principles of body mechanics. Maintains a safe environment, functioning with an awareness and application of safety issues identified within the unit facility.Ensures crash cart is immediately restocked with the appropriate items after each code.Notify the Bio-Med for nonfunctioning equipment in a timely manner.Maintains completeness of the patient chart for admission, transfer and discharge, medication reconciliation form. Updates the Kardex on a daily basis. Communication tool for change of shift report.Practices telephone etiquette when placing and answering calls for physicians, patient families and other departments.Maintains Telemetry admission and transfer log book and Telemetry staff daily patient assignment.Participates in data collection for PI specific to the unit.Completes additional duties as assigned by the staff.

Qualifications

High School diploma, preferred.

BLS (AHA) Certification upon hire and maintain current.

Six months’ previous experience as a monitor tech preferred.

EKG test upon hire.

Behavior Violence Prevention Training within 60 days of hire.
