Overview

The GI LAB RN is directly accountable to the OR Charge Nurse and Director of Surgical Services, and indirectly to the Shift Nursing Supervisor and Assistant Administrator of Patient Care Services  and responsible for the delivery

of direct and indirect patient care for the  Medical-Surgical Outpatient and some Inpatients receiving surgical and/or invasive procedure through the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation without assistance for adolescents, adults and older adults. Communicates with physicians, co-workers and/or nursing director, as appropriate about the patient’s clinical condition, including results of diagnostic studies and symptomatololgy.

 

Responsibilities

Implements care in a safe, knowledgeable, skillful, consistent and continuous manner, using nursing skills specific to the needs of the patient including physical, psychosocial, emotional and cultural needs.Detects and reports medication errors and ADR’s according to hospital policy. Safely and accurately administers medications with less than three (3) errors per quarter.Establishes priorities of patient care based on essential needs and available resources of time, equipment, personnel and supplies.Reviews and implements physician orders and keeps physicians informed of patient’s status.Accurately records and/or processes orders in a timely manner.Updates plan of care as necessary including discharge planning. Avoids and prevents injury to self and patients by applying the principles of body mechanics. Maintains a safe environment, functioning with an awareness and application of safety issues identified within the unit/facility.Ensures Crash Cart and Defibrillator function have been checked per protocol and after each use appropriate items are immediately replaced indicated by signature on the crash cart checklist).

Performs all other duties as assigned or required. 

Qualifications

1.     Current and valid state RN License.

2.     Current BLS (AHA) certificate upon hire and maintain current.

3.     ACLS 30 days upon hire and maintain current.

4.     Minimum of one year experience in an acute care or outpatient surgery setting or G.I. lab.
