Overview

Performs Diagnostic Radiographic, Cat Scan, Mammography, Bone Density, Ultra Sound or Special Procedures according to department protocols. Functions as the first line interface with customers and is successful in the accomplishment of their imaging needs. Participates in PI/ QC activities. Assists in Maintaining Performance Improvement Program. Supervises Radiology staff in the absence. Maintains department supplies. Promotes teamwork and good customer service. Assists in annual evaluations and staff discipline. Does scheduling for assigned sub departments and maintains supplies and equipment for assigned sub department. Responsible for processing and transmission of Images to PACS.

Responsibilities

Positions patients and sets technical factors for all diagnostic procedures.  Sets high personal standards for film and image quality.Follows department exam protocols.Modifies patient protocols relative to the patient physical and cognitive abilities. Discuss these issues with the Radiologist and properly document patient information.Appropriately charges all exams performed.Ensures all exams are accurately labeled with patient ID, date, technologist ID and time of exam.Covers patients during transportation and while performing procedures.Ensures compliance with all deemed agencies, State and Federal regulations.Maintains medical and surgical aseptic procedures / practices good infection control techniques, can fully explain universal precaution principle.Able to assess pain interfering with imaging procedure- makes appropriate physician contact for intervention.Has understanding and participates in PI process.All QC is done at required intervals and appropriately logged- Service calls are placed if QC is out of controls.Consistently maintains neat & clean workplace appropriate to hospital standards.Work pace is consistent with the department standards.  Able to assist Radiologist with therapeutic procedures by having all supplies and techniques ready.Sets technical factors accurately to minimize patient dose.  Consistently determines pregnancy status of women of child bearing age, before performing exam.Utilizes Radiations Safety Techniques while performing radiographic procedures and properly shields patients when appropriate.Follows all radiation safety standards for patients, employees and family members. Wears radiation badge as per protocol.Uses personal protective equipment appropriately and regularly.Informs and educates patients and families regarding procedure to be performed.Ascertains patient understanding of process and informed consent. Ensures consent is signed prior to examination.Checks patients’ identification before exams by at least two methods.Is able to assist Radiologist with therapeutic procedures by having all supplies and techniques ready.Follows hospital policies to reduce risk of wrong-site, wrong patient, and wrong procedure occurrences.Documents all medication reactions/infiltrations on appropriate form.Works to improve effectiveness of communication among caregivers.Communicates and documents patient’s condition/history for Radiologist.Sends all applicable results of prior examinations with telerad examinations.Has all abnormal results that are given verbally read back to ensure accuracy.Consistently determines pregnancy status of women of child bearing age, before performing exam.Demonstrates safe/ careful use of all equipment.Reports all equipment malfunctions and call for service immediately using department protocol.Supervises others as assigned by the department manager.Plans and assigns the work in an efficient manner based on department guideline.Helps evaluate employees and recommends action to Department Director.Deals with complaints in a professional and efficient manner and reports them to Department Director as soon as possible.Completes monthly department schedules and call schedules as requested by the department manager.  Schedules are done timely and posted in compliance with policy.Processes timecards in Directors’ absence.Conducts job-specific orientation for all new department employees.Assists in implementing Departmental Performance Improvement Program and Organizes PI documents and produces them on demand.Instructs all employees regarding how to collect data for PI.Maintains supplies at PAR levels.Maintains department equipment and ensures all preventative maintenance and repairs are complete.Suggests and implements improved methods of performing tasks.Attends meetings with or in place of Director as needed.Maybe required to participate in after hours uncontrolled standby and call back.  Position may require the use of pager while on duty, and while on standby.Monitors staffing daily recommends action to the Director, regarding daily staffing issues.  Staffing hours appropriate to workload.Monitors work climate and informs the Department Director of issues needing attention.  Provides relevant input for Department meetings.Plans and assigns workload fairly among those qualified to perform similar tasks.  Evaluates employees and recommends action to the Department Director.Attends and maintains mandatory training in safe patient handling, trained in safe lifting techniques, includes but not limited to 1) Appropriate use of lifting devices and equipment, 2) Five areas of body exposure: vertical, lateral, bariatric repositioning and ambulation 3) Use of lifting devices to handle patients safely.Supervises others as assigned by the department manager.Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Qualifications

  • Licensure and/or fluoroscopy permit as required by State.

  • Effective July 1, 2017 national certification in three modalities or if functioning in a leadership role, national certification in 2 modalities and leadership experience required.

  • Must be familiar with State and Federal regulations.

  • Current BCLS (AHA).

  • One year of acute clinical radiography preferred.

  • Graduate of a program accredited by JRCERT or ABHES

  • Proficient computer skills.
