Job Description

Overview The OB Technician performs a variety of patient care and clerical duties to assist and support the organization and function of the Labor/Delivery/Recovery/Postpartum (LDRP). Works cooperatively with and under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse. Provides direct care to patient of various ages (neonate, adolescent, adult). Interacts with physicians, patients, families/significant others, hospital staff and community agencies in providing basic care. Is responsible for completion and processing of the birth certificates, and “Declaration of Paternity” forms.

Responsibilities 1.Performs all aspects of Birth Certificate processing and filing, completes affidavits accurately and completely to amend records, maintains and updates County vital statistics training manual, Attends County Birth Clerk Training. Communicates and problem solves with County Vital Statistics staff as necessary.

2. Assists RN with completion of newborn screening form; completes Newborn “Screen Not Obtained” form and sends to local regulatory agency when infant transferred prior to obtaining newborn screen.

3. Is in compliance with information contained in the Infection Manual (i.e. OSHA blood borne pathogen standards, CDC Guidelines) and demonstrates appropriate use of personal protective equipment (e.g., gloves, gown, masks, and goggles) and hand hygiene techniques.

4. Collects all patient information in a timely manner, maintains patient care log, notifies admitting of admission in a timely manner, and maintains chalkboard in electronic medical record QS system.

5. Avoids and prevents injury to self and patients by applying the principles of body mechanics. Maintains a safe environment, functioning with an awareness and application of safety issues identified within the unit/facility, i.e. suction and oxygen immediately available when needed.

6. Consistently reports changes in patient condition immediately to the RN.

7. Responds appropriately to any obstetrical/neonatal emergencies or unusual situations and assists as able.

8. Paternity Opportunity Program (POP) information is given to all unwed mothers and sends appropriate paperwork in a timely manner for POP billing.

9. Information to apply for baby’s Social Security number is given to patients.

10. Provides confirmation letter and social security receipt for Medi-Cal to patients (necessary for WIC).

11. Obtains vital signs of patients when directed by RN and reports any abnormal findings.

12. Responds immediately and appropriately to all Code Pink alarms.

13. Questions the presence of unknown/unauthorized persons in the Perinatal Department and makes notifications as needed.

14. Maintains aseptic technique in setting delivery table. Performs instrument count with each delivery; Appropriately breaks down delivery table. Performs instrument count with each delivery; Appropriatley breaks down delivery table following delivery when returning infants to mother.

15. Attends and maintains mandatory training in safe patient handling, trained in safe lifting techniques, includes but not limited to 1) Appropriate use of lifting devices and equipment, 2) Five areas of body exposure: vertical, lateral, bariatric repositioning and ambulation, 3) Use of lifting devices to handle patients safely.

16. Consistently and appropriately performs universal protocol “time out” according to facility policy and uses two different patient identifiers before the transporting of the patient when needed.

17. Maintains current knowledge of advances in job-related technology and activities.

18. Performs other duties as assigned or required.

1. High School Diploma or Equivalent or related experience required for new hires effective April 2014.

2. Successful completion of a Nursing Assistant, Medical Assistant, EMT, ROP, Paramedic Training Program or equivalent required.

3. Current BLS (AHA) certificate upon hire and maintain current.

4. Certified Surgeical Technician, Required.
